Review of Talking Turkeys

by Young Jains Newsletter, March 1997

Review by Neha (9) and Vishaal Shah (12)

We think that 'Talking Turkeys' is fantastic. It has a very clever way of sending important messages humouraously as in the poems 'Memories', 'A Beetle Called Derek' and 'For Sale'.

Since it is very funny we didn't think it as a lecture but it also makes us aware of all the harmful things that people are doing to the environment. When children read it, it may inspire them to take some action, for example: instead of throwing things away they might decide to recycle it, they might start eatin gless meat or even no meat at all and it will definitely make them stop and thing twice before buying any animal products.

'Talking Turkeys' also has a share of weired poems such as this one which is short but has a rather clever twist.

Beat it
I broke my world record
I am famous for it
But now I am bored
Cos I have no music

Many people think that serious poems make children understand more about the environment and what's right and what's wrong, but really the only way to make children understand is to talk their language which is exactly what Benjamin Zephaniah does here.
