Goodbye Turkey

by Jean Garner

Twas me that rescued the turkey.
To keep it as a pet.
Some body should have told me an action I may regret.
It’s pecked at all my doors, pooped over my floors.
‘Twas me that rescued the turkey
I even hid the tin, they were going to cook it in.
Christmas comes once a year
My turkey looks like it isn’t going to be here next year.
I want to find it’s mum, it’s looking kind of glum.

No friends has my turkey, all he has is me.
He didn’t get any presents from under the Christmas tree.
I’m constantly reminded I chose it for a pet.
“NO, don’t cook him now; no not yet.”

Why are you always complaining? You aren’t getting any sleep
When you shut him in the barn.
From him you can’t hear a peep
His music is a bit loud I must confess.
I’ll take the batteries out, until you get some rest.

He comes form a land far away,
Where they dance and play reggae.
OK, then, buy me a dog, from your catalogue.
It breaks my heart to see him go,
I won’t be here when you strike the blow,
Don’t make his end too slow,
“No, don’t tell me know I don’t want to know.”
“I once rescued that turkey.
Now I have committed a sin,
You are asking me? Tell you, where I have hidden the tin.
The one you want to cook him in
My plate without any meat, all your dinner I must refuse,
O/K put veggie on my plate, I’ve just lost a mate.
I couldn’t find his mum, I guess she couldn’t run.
Being a turkey sure isn’t fun.
